JARO, Iloilo City, April 19, 2016 — In response to Pope Francis’ call for a dynamic Church with joyful evangelizers, the annual summer formation program for catechists in this archdiocese is designed to highlight the Jubilee of Mercy and the CBCP’s Year of the Eucharist and the Family.
The Archdiocese of Jaro, through the Archdiocesan Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education (ACCCE), is currently holding the Summer Catechetical Institute (SCI), a basic faith formation training program for catechists, from April 16 to May 16, 2016, at the St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary in Jaro, Iloilo City.
Evangelization, marriage, Eucharist
According to ACCCE Chairman Msgr. Ramon Pet, for the summer of 2016 the 5th SCI will combine the basic study of the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church with advanced subjects on the sacraments of Marriage and the Holy the Eucharist, “Special Moral Issues”, and “How to Integrate New Evangelization materials”.”
The ACCCE chairman added that in the 5th SCI, the messages of Pope Francis on the Jubilee of Mercy and the latest Post-Synodal Exhortation on Marriage and the Family will also be incorporated.
Held annually since 2012, the SCI runs as a four-week cyclical program with four course offerings: Phase 1 for beginners and Phases 2, 3, and, 4 for those who have already attended the prerequisite courses in the previous years.
Competent personnel, staff
In order to prepare more and well-trained catechists, the SCI enlists the collaboration of competent personnel among its teaching staff.
Aside from its Chairman, Msgr. Pet, who teaches the subject on “Panorama of Biblical History”, the SCI staff includes:
- Msgr. Alejandro Esperancilla (Sacraments);
- Fr. Julius Almeria (Fundamental Liturgy);
- Fr. Ian Niel Llona (Morals);
- Linda T. Tacorda, Ph.D. (Fundamental Catechesis and Methodology);
- Sr. Socorro Garrachico, CM, (Catechetics);
- Sem. Joaper Geraneo and Sem. Bunnie Reydel Ambao (Scriptures, Sacraments, Creed and Morality);
- Ms. Gemma Sarduma (Sacrament and Morality);
- Ms. Fely Lopez (Mary, Saints, and Spirituality of Catechesis);
- Mr. Benjie Pelobello (Biblical Apologetics); and
- Ms. Purita Escobia (Creed)
“To facilitate the enlistment of catechists to the SCI, we keep the registration fee to a minimum (Php 2,000 only) to cover board and lodging. This sum is to make the program affordable for applicants who are willing to undergo training and updating yet have financial difficulties,” explained Pet.
This summer 66 catechists from 26 parishes in the Archdiocese of Jaro are participating in the 5th SCI. (Fr. Mickey Cardenas / CBCP News)
